WHEN REALITY SETS IN

Memory Verse: (Phil 4:6 NIV)  Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Scripture Reading:

(Mark 4:35-41 NIV)  That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." {36} Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. {37} A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. {38} Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" {39} He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. {40} He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" {41} They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"

4.  Faith

The word translated squall hear in Greek means a windstorm, whirlwind, tempest, or fierce windstorm.

Greek word translated drown also mean die, perish, ruin, lost.

1.   Truth
Mark 4:36-38 NIV)  Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. {37} A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. {38} Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"

 According to Rev. Tom Holladay:
a. The storm represent unexpected problem.

b. The waves represent overwhelming circumstances in your life.

c. the boat represents inadequate resources. Why? Because the boat is very small for the task ahead.

d. The fact that Jesus was sleeping is indicative of the fact that the people feel alone.—Tom Holladay

(2 Chr 20:12 NIV)  O our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you."

There’s something liberating about not pretending. Dare to embarrass yourself. Risk.—Drew Barrymore.

(Prov 12:9 NIV)  Better to be a nobody and yet have a servant than pretend to be somebody and have no food.

2. Talk

(Mark 4:38-41 NIV)  Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.

(Psa 118:8-9 NIV) It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. {9} It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes.

Are you weary, are you heavy hearted

Author: Edmund S. Lorenz

Are you weary, are you heavy hearted?
Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.
Are you grieving over joys departed?
Tell it to Jesus alone.

Refrain

Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus,
He is a Friend that’s well known.
You’ve no other such a friend or brother,
Tell it to Jesus alone.

Do you fear the gathering clouds of sorrow?
Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.
Are you anxious what shall be tomorrow?
Tell it to Jesus alone.

Refrain

3. Trust:

(Mark 4:38-41 NIV)  Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.

(Jonah 1:5-6 NIV)  All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. {6} The captain went to him and said, "How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us, and we will not perish."

(Psa 65:7 NIV)  who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations.

(Psa 89:8-9 NIV)  O LORD God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you. {9} You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them.

(Psa 107:29 NIV)  He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.

(Psa 46:1 NIV) God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.

(Mat 6:27 NIV)  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

(Mat 6:30 NIV)  If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

4. Tranquility.

(Mark 4:38-41 NIV)  Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.

A hymn has the following:

When upon life's billows
You are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged,
Thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings,
Name them one by one,
And it will surprise you
What the Lord hath done.

(John 14:27 NIV)  Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

(1 Chr 29:11 NIV)  Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.

(Mark 4:39 NIV)  He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

(Mark 1:25 NIV)  "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!"

"be still, and stay still."

(Mat 6:26-27 NIV)  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? {27} Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?

(Mat 6:34 NIV)  Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

(1 Pet 5:7 NIV)  Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Conclusion:
(Phil 4:6 NIV)  Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
