Jesus: the The Author of Our Rebirth (Sermon Outline)

Getting To Know Jesus Series

Jesus the The Author of Our Rebirth

John 1:12-13 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of natural descent,c nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

INTRODUCTION:

Our Lord Jesus Christ authored our rebirth.

Joel 2:13 Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.

Romans 3:23 NIV for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 3:23 NLT For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard.

When we try to change our sinful state by our own personal acts of righteousness, it doesn’t work.

Isaiah 64:6 6 All of us have become like one who is unclean,

and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;

we all shrivel up like a leaf,

and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

Psalm 53:2-3 2God looks down from heaven

on the sons of men

to see if there are any who understand,

any who seek God.

3Everyone has turned away,

they have together become corrupt;

there is no one who does good,

not even one.

Romans 7:24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

Roman 7:25 Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

John 1:12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--

John says “. . . children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God” (John 1:13 NIV).

I. The Distinction

The phrase: “nor of human decision” literally “not of the will of the flesh,”

The GOD'S WORD® Translation (©1995) translates it as:

These people didn't become God's children in a physical way-from a human impulse or from a husband's desire [to have a child]. They were born from God.

New Living Translation (©2007) translates it as:

They are reborn--not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.

2. The Description:

(John 1:12-13 NIV) 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of natural descent,c nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Ephesians 2:1-10 1As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful naturea and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

John 3:1-15 says:

1Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.”

3In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.a”

4“How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”

5Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spiritb gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘Youc must be born again.’ 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

9“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

10“You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.d 14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.e

CONCLUSION:

John 1:12-13 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13children born not of natural descent,c nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
